50 Fab Faux Locs Hairstyles (Butterfly, Boho, Distressed and More)

As naturalistas who love to switch our hairstyles up, faux locs give us the ability to rock “dreadlocks” without the commitment. There are so many different types of faux locs out now, including butterfly locs, goddess locs, soft locs, bohemian locs, distressed locs and more, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the options.

Are faux locs a good protective style?

While faux locs are easily a 10 from an aesthetic perspective, they don’t necessarily rank as high on our protective style scale for natural hair. See, it’s pretty common to use about 6-8 packs of hair to complete a look. Depending on the style of locs chosen and the installation method, they can get pretty heavy, pretty quickly, causing tension and ultimately breakage, or worse, traction alopecia.

The wrap method for example, typically requires filler hair for longer lengths, meaning more weight. Those locs also tend to be tighter at the roots in an effort to secure them, and allow less access to your natural hair for thorough care and cleansing; all together defeating the purpose of protective styling, if you’re not careful.

Pre-looped faux locs, on the other hand, using the crochet installation method are a much better alternative for protective styling. Your natural hair is braided in a combination of individual but linked box braids in the front and cornrows at the back, which serve as a base to attach your locs.

Known as the illusion braiding pattern, utilizing this approach means there’s no need to worry about leave outs, blending or ultimately damage, since your natural hair is still relatively accessible to be cleaned, hydrated, and moisturized, as needed.

What type of hair should you use for faux locs?

While some people opt for human hair, synthetic is most commonly used, due to the longevity, as well as the considerably lower price. The type of synthetic hair will vary based on your selected locs style, like Marley vs Kanekalon or Water Wave; not to mention pre-looped locs which are ideal for those who prefer a done for you approach.

How long do faux locs last?

Known to get better over time, faux locs have been hailed for lasting up to 12 weeks. Just because you can keep them in however, doesn’t mean you should. We don’t recommend that any protective style be stretched for longer than 8 weeks, as that increases the likelihood of damaging your natural hair.

And now that we’ve gotten our PSA out of the way, let’s get into these lewks.
